February 10, 2011Happy (Belated) New Year (Again)!

/news/images/blogicon-20110210.png Yeah, last year was not our best. But there are a lot of changes in the pipe for this year.

I'm dedicated to making 2011 the biggest year for GMLscripts.com yet.

January 10, 2010Happy (Belated) New Year!

/news/images/blogicon-20100110.png Yeah, yeah, I'm late. I even toyed with the idea of forging the date of this post, but I think I've had enough of that rebuilding the forum, and hacking my website is so 2009*.

The final release version of Game Maker 8 was released a few weeks ago. It's been given a fresh coat of paint and features some drastic improvements in the sprite and script editors. There are also many significant changes to GML in this version and that means there are several scripts that do not work with it. Please help me hunt them down and post about them here in this Script Alumni topic.

Game Maker isn't the only thing getting an upgrade. GMLscripts.com is going to have to grow to keep up with GM8. Many things could work better here. I'm sure you can think of a few. Please join me in discussing them and the future of GMLscripts.com this Community topic.

In non-Game Maker news, ChevyRay's FlashPunk has just been released. If you're a GM user with a hankering to try some Flash game programming, I think you'll find some welcome features in the FlashPunk game library. Check it out.

September 20, 2009Game Maker 8 Release Candidate

/news/images/blogicon-20090920.png The third and latest test version of Game Maker 8 is now available. It is optimistically called a "release candidate". Is the third time the charm? We shall see.

According to Game Maker Blog, this release is set to expire at the end of October.

Some new features added since the last release:

  • The import/export mechanism was extended to correctly maintain the resource tree. In this way is will indeed extend the functionality of Merge Game and can also be used to defragment games.

  • The size of the code completion form is now remembered.

  • Double clicking on a line in the code editor now selects the whole line.

  • Added functions mouse_wheel_up and mouse_wheel_down.

  • Added a function set_application_title(title) to set the title of the application (which is shown in the taskbar).

  • Added function file_text_eoln.

  • Added read-only variabe debug_mode.

  • When closing the debug form the game will continue to run.

  • Size of the script form is now maintained.

  • In the code editor you can now select text by using Shift while clicking with the mouse. Also you can copy a selection by dragging it with Ctrl.

  • In the code editor Ctrl + Space will show the completion form even when not shown default.

  • In the image editor, arrow heads are now filled with the right color.

  • Runtime error mesages now better indicating the position of the error.

  • Added zoom options to the sprite mask form.

  • In image and sprite editor, shifting images now allows for wrapping horizontally and/or vertically.

  • Added a function splash_set_position.

September 19, 2009Twitter Pated?

/news/images/blogicon-20090919.png It's true, I've got Twitter on my mind. I was considering setting up a client with it to help his business, and thought, maybe I should have a go. So I've set up a Twitter account to post about mythical site updates. I know, I know.

I've said awful things about Twitter in the past. I'm not a fan of Twitter. It's not for anti-social people like me who hate the telephone. But it's a very interesting social medium and I'll admit I've misjudged it a little. So if you Tweet, please Follow.

Don't worry. I won't be spamming you with robotic RSS feeds about new posts. I'll keep it human and give a nice heads up when something interesting comes along about the site, Game Maker in general, or anything that might further inflate my ego.

I even managed to use it to get Sandy Duncan, CEO of YoYo Games, to spill the beans about the upcoming Game Maker 8 Release Candidate. Expect it "probably next week". OK, not very Earth-shattering since Mark Overmars said as much two weeks ago.

See? I was nice. I didn't even call you "twits" once.
